As some of my friends and colleagues know, I have been working on developing advocacy ideas and practices to meet the needs of youth who are both gifted and gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans*, and/or questioning.
My website is going to be live very soon. In advance of that, I’ve set up this blog.
Here, I plan to share news and ideas on issues affecting this group of generally under-served youth, and I welcome the (respectful and cogent, please) thoughts of my readers. My goal is to post weekly, as long as I have something to say.
Big News This Week!
In case you have not heard, on April 3, 2014, the MN Senate finally passed a revised form of the “Safe Schools for All” legislation. This bill now must revisit the House and, assuming it finds quick passage there, get signed into law by Governor Dayton.
The Star Tribune covered the news on April 4.
This bill is important for gifted students and for GLBTQ students, and ESPECIALLY for those who are both, because it requires that districts no longer allow students to be bullied in the course of trying to get a basic education in the State of Minnesota.
Youth in Minnesota’s schools have a right to feel safe when they go to school. Enacting this law is an important step toward guaranteeing that right.
